Compass Design Serves Up an Appealing Design for Peaches 'N Cream

MINNEAPOLIS (February 2001)- Minneapolis-based Compass Design has created an eye-catching image representing the delightful taste combination of peaches and cream for the Kemps/Marigold Foods limited edition Peaches'n Cream ice cream packaging.

"From the start, we knew that we'd use an image of a peach on the carton," said Mitch Lindgren, partner/designer at Compass, "but we wanted to make sure we had the best visual representation possible, so we researched several sources."

After a visit to the grocery store to purchase some of this sweet-smelling fruit and following an in-depth investigation of several historical and current visual sources, the Compass Design team ultimately decided on an image taken from an antique fruit crate. "We felt it best captured the ripe, juicy quality of a peach," said Lindgren.

With the hand-rendered, perfect peach image selected, Compass designers began preparing pencil sketches to present to the client.

"We experimented with several different concepts," said Tom Arthur, partner/designer. "One featured a single peach image in front of a sunrise, while another showed a peach splashing into a dish of cream."

Arthur added that each concept featured its own unique, hand-lettered type to complement the personality of the design.

The concept ultimately chosen by Kemps/Marigold Foods was one that combined a background of multiple peaches with an old-fashioned Serif-style type. To create the look of multiple peaches, Compass designers used a computer to duplicate a single, hand-rendered peach image and transform it into bunches.

Kemp's Peaches'n Cream limited edition ice cream is available at selected grocery stores throughout the upper Midwest.
